There is significant variation in the content and scope of pediatric nursing courses offered by universities. Some of the universities provide these courses only as elective studies. The scope and content of pediatric nursing courses have an impact on the quality of pediatric nursing. Students need more opportunities to study pediatric nursing, so they feel better prepared for both practical training and working field.
In addition to the varying course offerings, students’ life situations affect when they are best able to focus on their studies and complete their coursework. Some can study full-time, while others divide their time between work, study, and, for example, caring for their families. The goal is to help every student to succeed by providing them with new ways and opportunities to learn. VRLE simulations offer flexibility by allowing students to complete courses on schedule, without requiring the whole class to be present at the same place at the same time. Currently, if a student misses a live simulation due to illness or other reasons, the next possibility may not be until the following semester, possibly causing financial consequences.
Practical training possibilities for pediatric nursing can be challenging. There is fewer practical training places directly related to pediatric nursing than there are students. That creates unequal learning opportunities during their studies. Training with pediatric patients also raises ethical considerations. When working with children, their experience during the treatment must be a priority. Often students may primarily observe and assist rather than actively participate in the treatment. Students need to be given opportunities to practice realistic pediatric nursing situations before entering their practical training.
All universities do not have access to the same level of equipment for their simulation training. Some have well-designed simulation rooms with simulation mannequins while others still rely on pre-set cases and imaginary settings. VRLE simulations allow students to train practical skills at their own pace in an immersive learning environment preparing them for real-life situations.
We envision a future where a fully equipped VRLE hospital with a wide variety of clinical training possibilities offers all students equal learning opportunities preparing them for working life and lifelong learning.
